Welcome to this edition of "The Stats Behind The Game." This recurring deep dive breaks down the analytics behind each Vancouver Canucks game as recorded by Natural Stat Trick. In this article, we look back on the Canucks most recent 4-3 overtime loss to the St. Louis Blues.
When diving into the analytics, it is clear this was a game where Vancouver deserved to win but couldn't capitalize on their opportunities. The Canucks finished the night at even-strength with a 37-23 scoring chances advantage while also winning the high-danger chances battle 19-11. In the end, though, the Blues were able to capitalize off mistakes and, as Vancouver has done for the majority of the season, shut down the Canucks during the second and third periods while escaping with a victory.
The best way to describe this game is through the heatmap. As is displayed below, Vancouver did a fantastic job all night creating chances from high-danger areas. While they were able to limit St. Louis' opportunities, they struggled to keep the front of the net clear as the Blues finished the night with an average goal distance of 15.25 feet. While losing is never ideal, there are positives to take away from this game, with the main one being that the Canucks continued to push to the final buzzer while, for the most part, continuing to play well in their own end.

Let's look at Pius Suter and his hat trick game to wrap things up. He played 12:31 at even strength; he led the Canucks with an individual expected goals of .79 while also creating a game-high four individual high-danger chances. While on the ice, Vancouver also won the scoring chances battle 14-8, finishing with an xGF% of 78.78. He continues to show how versatile of a player he is and why he may be the best free agent signing general manager Patrik Allvin made this offseason.
