The 2025 NHL Entry Draft takes place on June 27, and the Vancouver Canucks currently have one pick in each round. Barring any trades, the Canucks will be selecting 15th in the first round, with many suggestions for players to pick already being pitched. In preparation for this year’s draft, we’re taking a look at the past five NHL Entry Drafts that the Canucks have taken part in, as well as where each of their picks have ended up. Last week, we took a look at the Canucks 2023 Draft picks. This week, let’s look back at the 2024 NHL Draft.
Last season, Vancouver didn’t make their first pick of the NHL Draft until the third round. They traded their 2024 first-round pick to the Calgary Flames in order to acquire Elias Lindholm, also sending over Andrei Kuzmenko, Hunter Brzustewicz, Joni Jurmo, and a 2024 fourth-rounder originally belonging to the New Jersey Devils. The Canucks moved their 2024 second-round pick back in 2022, using it to move Jason Dickinson to the Chicago Blackhawks while getting defenceman Riley Stillman. They gave a 2024 fifth-rounder to the Toronto Maple Leafs for Sam Lafferty, and acquired an extra sixth-round selection for Jack Studnicka. With their five selections, Vancouver picked Melvin Fernström, Riley Patterson, Anthony Romani, Parker Alcos, and Basile Sansonnens.
Fernström was the Canucks’ first pick of the draft, going to Vancouver 93rd overall in the third round. The 6’2 forward has been with Örebro HK since the 2022–23 season, going from J18 to J20, as well as spending time in the SHL. Fernström’s draft year saw him play 45 games with Örebro HK J20 Nationell, during which he scored 31 goals and 32 assists. During eight playoff games, he had five goals and five assists. Fernström was involved in the second Canucks trade of January 31, 2025. He was sent to the Pittsburgh Penguins alongside Danton Heinen, Vincent Desharnais, and a 2025 first-round draft pick (New York Rangers) in exchange for Marcus Pettersson and Drew O’Connor. Fernström is expected to play with Örebro during the 2025–26 season.
Vancouver’s next selection in the 2024 NHL Draft was Patterson, a forward who ultimately went 125th overall in the fourth round. Patterson has been with the Barrie Colts of the OHL since his draft year, during which he scored 29 goals and 33 points in 68 games played. In Barrie’s six-game playoff run of the same year, Patterson had two goals and an assist. The 2024–25 season played out differently for Barrie, as they made a much deeper playoff push than the year before. Patterson had 25 goals and 34 assists in 64 regular season games, and had six goals and six assists in the team’s 16 postseason games. Patterson and the Colts were swept in the Conference Finals by the Oshawa Generals, who went on to lose to the London Knights in the OHL Final.
Patterson was not the only Canucks prospect to play for the Colts in 2024–25. Vancouver’s first sixth-round selection of 2024 was Romani, who was picked 162nd overall. Romani played with the North Bay Battalion for four different seasons, tallying 91 goals and 82 assists in 194 games. He kicked things up a notch in his draft year, scoring 58 goals and 53 assists in 68 games. Only six games into his 2024–25 season with North Bay, much of which he missed due to injury, he was traded to the Colts. In 29 games with Barrie, he registered 19 goals and 11 assists. Romani found another offensive level in the playoffs, putting up 12 goals and 12 assists in the team’s Conference Final exit. In May, news broke that Romani would be leaving the OHL and joining Michigan State University of the NCAA for at least the 2025–26 season.

For their second sixth-round pick of the 2024 NHL Draft, the Canucks went with a local player and selected Alcos, who is from Port Moody, BC. Picked 189th overall, the defensive prospect spent the 2019–20 and 2020–21 seasons with Burnaby Winter Club, a popular hockey development program in BC, before ending up with the Edmonton Oil Kings of the WHL in 2022. In his first 12 games with the Oil Kings, Alcos had two assists. Since then, he has averaged around 15 points per season, most of which have come from assists. He also had two assists in Edmonton’s seven-game playoff run in 2024–26.

Vancouver’s final selection in last year’s draft at 221st overall was Sansonnens, a 6’4 Swiss defender. He spent most of his junior career with HC Fribourg-Gottéron’s U15 and U17 division, having been part of the organization from 2018 to 2024. After being drafted, Sansonnens moved on to Rimouski Océanic of the QMJHL, tallying a goal and 11 assists in 54 games played. During this season, he was named to Switzerland’s roster for the 2025 IIHF World Junior Championship. He and Rimouski played 23 games during the 2025 Memorial Cup, though they did not make it past the round-robin portion of the tournament. Sansonnens is expected to return to Switzerland for the 2025–26 season and will play for Lausanne HC.
