Canucks 2024 Draft Target: Luca Marrelli

With the 2024 NHL Draft approaching, it's time to look at some prospects that may be available to the Vancouver Canucks. While the Canucks do not have a first or second-round pick, this a deep class that will have talented players available throughout. Today's prospect is defenceman Luca Marrelli, who Vancouver could select with the 93rd overall pick.

Listed at 6'2", 183 pounds, Marrelli is an offensively gifted defenceman who has spent the last three seasons playing for the Oshawa Generals. A right-shot defender, Marrelli often elects to carry the puck out of his own zone rather than force a pass that can turn into a giveaway. With 51 points in 67 games this season, his playmaking ability took a massive step forward this year which allowed him to become a key piece of the Generals' power play.

When watching Marrelli in the defensive zone, the first thing that stands out is his willingness to throw hits. Whether it is in his own zone or while defending against the rush, Marrelli times his hits perfectly and is able to separate the puck carrier from the puck with ease. Marrelli also brings that physical style of play along the wall, as he is able to win board battles and jar the puck loose for his teammates to start the transition game.

Marrelli is also a good skater who can change angles in the offensive to create passing or shooting lanes. He is an active defender who is constantly moving and has enough speed to get back and defend against the opposition's counterattack. Averaging close to 24 minutes a game this year, Marrelli is a calming presence on the ice and showed he can lead a blue line at both ends of the ice.

Overall, Marrelli has a lot of tools that should translate well to the NHL. He is a prospect who continued to improve all season and, with the correct development, could be a stable second or third-pair defenceman at the pro level. If he is available at 93rd overall, the Canucks should jump on the opportunity to add him to the organization.
