It was a good day for Vancouver Canucks prospects at the 2024 World Junior Summer Showcase as both Melvin Fernström and Anthony Romani hit the scoresheet and helped their home nations claim victory. Fernström recorded an assist in Team Sweden's win over Team USA, while Romani's assist helped Canada defeat Team Finland. Both 2024 NHL Draft picks also finished the night with two penalty minutes in what was a thrilling day of hockey.
Starting with Fernström, he recorded the primary assist on Felix Nilsson's goal in the second period. The Canucks third-round pick was able to poke the puck ahead for Nilsson, who beat Sam Hillebrandt to make it 4-2 Sweden. Fernström, who has now played three games against Team USA, has two assists in this tournament, along with six penalty minutes.
As for Romani, he was making his debut for Team Canada in their game against Finland. Romani's assist came on the power play as he was able to find Beckett Sennecke with a perfect cross-ice path. Despite being listed on the fourth line, Romani was a constant on the second power play unit, which could indicate that he is a player Team Canada is taking a long look at.
Both Team Canada and Team Sweden will wrap up their tournaments on Saturday. Fernström and Sweden will face Finland at 10:00 a.m. PT, while Team Canada will face Team USA at 1:00 p.m. PT. While rosters for Canada's final game are not set yet, both Romani and Sawyer Mynio have a good chance of being included. The 2025 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships is scheduled to take place in Ottawa and will run from December 26, 2024, to January 5, 2025.
