The Edmonton Oilers have added another WHL prospect to their farm system, signing undrafted free agent James Stefan to a three-year entry-level contract. Stefan is having a career year with the Portland Winterhawks and has posted career highs in goals (48), assists (51) and points (99). With 254 points in 251 career WHL games, he ranks in the top 20 on the Winterhawks all-time points list.
Son of former NHLer Patrik Štefan, Stefan is one of seven Portland players with ties to NHL teams. Originally from Laguna Beach, he is on pace to become the first American to surpass 100 points in a season since Emerson Etem achieved the feat with the Medicine Hat Tigers during the 2011-12 campaign. A leader on the Winterhawks, he recently helped Portland clinch their first U.S. Division since 2020. With three games remaining on the schedule, the Winterhawks are currently fighting with the Prince George Cougars for top spot in the Western Conference.
