It was an exciting day for Team Canada as they defeated the USA in the Gold Medal Game at the 2024 IIHF World U18 Championship. Canada's power play was spectacular, scoring four times in a 6-4 victory. Here is a look at three WHLers who stood out in the win.
Gavin McKenna- Medicine Hat Tigers/Canada
Gavin McKenna saved his best performance for the Gold Medal game, scoring a hat trick and adding an assist in 19:47 of ice time. The Medicine Hat Tigers superstar also led the game with seven shots and scored the empty net goal to solidify the win. The new Canadian record holder for points (20) and goals (10) in a single tournament, McKenna showed he can elevate his play both at the WHL level and on the International stage.
Tij Iginla- Kelowna Rockets/Canada
Tij Iginla had a game to remember for the Canadians. The Kelowna Rockets forward scored the game-winning goal while also recording two assists. Recording 12 points in seven games, Iginla solidified himself as a top prospect heading into the NHL Draft.
Ryder Ritchie- Prince Albert Raiders/Canada
Ryder Ritchie had an impressive showing for Canada in the Gold Medal Game. He scored Canada's first goal of the game while also assisting on the Canadian's 4-3 goal. The Prince Albert Raiders forward stepped up in a big way and can now call himself a Gold Medalist at the U18s.
