While the Boston Bruins' season started off poorly against the Florida Panthers last night (Oct. 8), there is still plenty of optimism surrounding the team for this campaign. They added some notable players in free agency and finally signed Jeremy Swayman, so they should be a real threat in the Eastern Conference.

However, besides making some notable splashes like Elias Lindholm and Nikita Zadorov, they also have some young players who have the potential to take big steps forward this season. Bruins defenseman Mason Lohrei is easily among the most notable.

Lohrei, 23, had a solid rookie season in 2023-24, recording four goals and 13 points in 41 games. However, his play notably improved down the stretch as he adjusted more to the NHL level. This was especially so during the playoffs, as he had one goal and four points in 11 games during Boston's post-season run.

Now in 2024-25, Lohrei is expected to be a significant part of the Bruins' defensive group. In the Bruins' opening-night contest, Lohrei was given second-pairing minutes and was slotted on their second power-play unit. Clearly, the Bruins are putting him in a position to succeed, and it will be fascinating to see if he takes advantage of it from here.

Nevertheless, with Lohrei having great upside and now in his second season with Boston, don't be surprised if he hits a new level both offensively and defensively in 2024-25.
