The Boston Bruins traded away several former key players at the 2025 NHL trade deadline, and forward Trent Frederic was one of them. The Bruins traded the 2016 first-round pick to the Edmonton Oilers in a three-team trade with the New Jersey Devils.
Fast forward to today, and Frederic is currently in the Stanley Cup Final with the Oilers. In 18 playoff games for the Oilers so far this spring, the 27-year-old forward has recorded one goal, four points, 66 hits, and a plus-1 rating. Overall, he has given the Oilers' bottom six plenty more bite, and it appears that the Oilers are happy with what they are getting from the former Bruin.
In the latest episode of 32 Thoughts: The Podcast, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman shared that Frederic could end up staying with the Oilers.
"One of the things that's being rumored around here is that Trent Frederic might be sticking around (in Edmonton)," Friedman said. "Like not leaving, sticking around, yes. So, we'll see. I can't imagine we're going to find out during the Final. They got more important things to worry about, but that was something I heard in and around the building tonight."
Frederic, 27, is a pending unrestricted free agent and can hit the market on July 1. However, based on these comments from Friedman, it seems that Frederic very well could be staying put in Edmonton. If the Oilers do re-sign him, he would continue to be a solid part of their bottom six.
In 337 games over seven seasons with the Bruins, Frederic recorded 55 goals, 109 points, 307 penalty minutes, and 672 hits. His best season in Boston was during the 2023-24 season, when he set career highs with 18 goals, 22 assists, and 40 points in 81 games.
