Carolina Goes To Sweden Again For Second Pick; Selects Talented Centerman
By targeting an under-scouted sleeper from Sweden's lower ranks, the Hurricanes gamble on Wiggo Sorensson’s elite skating and offensive processing to unearth a high-upside draft gem.
The Carolina Hurricanes first two picks in the 2026 NHL Draft both wound up being Swedish, first selecting defenseman William Hakansson and then drafting center Wiggo Sorensson with the 61st overall pick.
The 18-year-old center played primarily in HockeyTvaan, Sweden's fourth league, which is a bit of an unusual place to see a prospect drafted from.
While not the biggest guy (5-foot-10, 178lbs), his skating speed and offensive instincts are both above average giving him clear upside potential.
The Hockey News had him outside of their top-100 prospects, but Tony Ferrari listed Sorensson as one of his sleeper picks.
"Playing in a lower division in Sweden means Sorrensson was under-scouted, but his skills and offensive processing are impressive, nonetheless," Ferrari wrote.
