Former San Jose Sharks captain Joe Pavelski announced that he would be retiring during his exit interview.
Pavelski is ending his 18-year NHL career without a Stanley Cup. He is next in line of all-time great Sharks players who never won a championship.
"The Big Pavelski" spent 13 years with San Jose. He played in 963 career regular-season games and amassed 355 goals and 406 assists. Before the start of the 2015-16 season, he was named the ninth captain in team history.
After leaving San Jose, Pavelski signed with the Dallas Stars and continued to shine as one of the league's most consistent forwards. He brought leadership on and off the ice. For the past two seasons, his teammate Wyatt Johnston has been staying at his house, and many of his teammates got emotional when speaking about what he meant to the Stars.
Pavelski was named captain of Team USA during the 2016 World Cup of Hockey, giving him the nickname "Captain America."
The 39-year-old was a 7th-round pick in 2003 and has become one of the best players out of his draft class. His story is remarkable, and although nothing is official, Pavelski's time, not just with the Sharks, will not be forgotten should he officially retire.
Joe Thornton is getting his No. 19 retired by San Jose next season, and the Sharks might have to set up a third banner raising for Pavelski's iconic No. 8.
