A look at some of the analytics from the Canucks 2-1 loss to the Washington Capitals.

Welcome to this edition of "The Stats Behind The Game." This recurring deep dive breaks down the analytics behind each Vancouver Canucks game as recorded by Natural Stat Trick. In this article, we look back on the Canucks most recent 2-1 loss to the Washington Capitals.

According to the analytics, this was a balanced game, with the only significant difference being the Capitals' ability to hit the net. At even strength, both teams had 23 scoring chances and 11 high-danger scoring chances, with Washington holding a slight advantage in the xGF% category, finishing the night at 54.15%. While this was a low-event game, Vancouver had plenty of opportunities but could not capitalize on them and struggled, especially in the third period.

The heatmap for this game backs up Rick Tocchet's post-game comments about the Canucks inability to generate chances from the middle of the ice. Most of Vancouver's shots came from either the point or right in front of the net. This led to Charlie Lindgren only facing two high-danger shots, compared to 15 low-danger shots. Whether it was missing the net high or not being able to get the shot to the net, the Canucks offence struggled, leading to only one goal on the night.

As for their defensive coverage, Vancouver allowed too many chances right in front of the net. Casey DeSmith faced eight high-danger shots on the net, with both goals coming off these chances. While the shot and chance totals were low compared to other games this season, the Canucks made too many mistakes in their own zone, which in the end, cost them on the scoreboard.

Lastly, one player that stood out was Tyler Myers. Returning to action after missing the last five games with a lower-body injury, he played 19:52, finishing with a shot block and an individual high-danger chance created. At even strength, Vancouver outshot the Capitals 6-2 with Myers on the ice, while the Canucks defenceman ended the game with an xGF% of 71.03. Overall, he played a solid game and showed how reliable he can be when tasked with shutting down the opposition's top lines.
