Ilya Mikheyev has two years left on his current deal with the Vancouver Canucks but does have a 12-team no-trade list.
The partnership between the Vancouver Canucks and Ilya Mikheyev may be coming to an end. According to Rick Dhaliwal of "Donnie and Dhali," the Canucks have given Mikheyev's agent permission to speak to other teams around the league about a potential trade. Mikheyev is currently represented by Dan Milstein and Gold Star Sports Management, who are also currently negotiating a contract extension for Nikita Zadorov.
Moving Mikheyev is not an easy task. The Russian winger struggled during the 2023-24 season and failed to register a point during the playoffs. As for the contract, Mikheyev carries a $4.75 million cap hit for each of the next two seasons while also possessing a 12-team no-trade clause.
This is not the first time Vancouver's management group has given permission to an agent to seek a trade. In February 2023, Brock Boeser's agent was given permission, while Conor Garland went through a similar situation at the start of the season. In the end, neither player was traded, which turned out for the best, as both had significant impacts on the Canucks during the 2023-24 campaign.
With Vancouver needing to clear cap space to keep their high-end free agents, moving Mikheyev seems like the optimal option. While it may cost future assets to move him, it could be for the betterment of the team as the Canucks look to build off one of their most successful seasons in franchise history. With less than two weeks until July 1, GM Patrik Allvin and Milstein will need to work quickly to get this deal sorted out before the start of free agency.
