The Vancouver Canucks were linked to Carolina Hurricanes forward Jake Guentzel around the trade deadline, and reports say that the Hurricanes are open to moving his signing rights before July 1st.
The Canucks are searching for a top-six forward, specifically a winger, this offseason. They have already been connected to Guentzel's teammate, Martin Necas.
With Guentzel supposedly being available for a mid-round draft pick, that could limit the Canucks. The Canucks don't have a first or second-round pick in the 2024 NHL Draft, and if the Hurricanes want a third-round pick, that would severely limit the Canucks further.
The former Pittsburgh Penguins winger is one of the most consistent forwards in the league. He's scored at or around a point-per-game pace throughout his career and has scored at least 30 goals four times.
Guentzel will be expensive to re-sign, and with a high cap hit expected, the likelihood of re-signing Elias Lindholm would plummet. If the Canucks acquire Guentzel, they would have to feel like there is a good chance they can come to an agreement.
Guentzel's well-rounded, offensive game would fit the Canucks needs ideally, but it could cost them a hefty price. Guentzel's familiarity with Canucks President of Hockey Operations Jim Rutherford may be a motivating factor for an extension.
Vancouver must also decide on a few pending free agents, such as Filip Hronek, Tyler Myers, Nikita Zadorov, and Dakota Joshua.
The Canucks haven't been linked to Guentzel since his rights were reportedly available, but things can change in a flash.
