Vancouver Canucks defenseman Quinn Hughes joined elite company by becoming just the third NHL defenseman to reach 90 points since the 1994-95 season.
With 91 points in 79 games, Hughes is the only defenseman to reach at least 90 points, joining Erik Karlsson and Roman Josi.
Erik Karlsson reached 101 points last season and won the Norris trophy. Roman Josi looked like he had won his second Norris trophy in three seasons with his 96-point season in 2021-22 but was beaten out via voting points by Makar. Josi had six more first-place votes.
He's by far the best defenseman in the NHL this season, and his metrics across the entire ice prove that.
With three games remaining, Hughes needs two assists to match Karlsson's total of 76 from last season. Hughes is also a +40, which is good enough for fourth in the entire league.
This season, he has had nine games in which he scored three or more assists. Only two other defensemen in NHL history have achieved that feat: Bobby Orr and Ray Bourque.
Hughes is having a career season, and his stats and on-ice play should lead him to his first career Norris Trophy.
