Willander's 2025–26 Season
Willander had a strong rookie NHL campaign. The 21-year-old played 70 games with Vancouver, scoring five goals and recording 21 points. During the season, Willander also blocked 78 shots while averaging 16:59 of ice time per night.
While it took some time, Willander really started to hit his stride after the trade deadline. He became more vocal in the locker room from a media perspective and looked more confident on the ice. Near the end of the season, Willander also started getting more opportunities, which included time on the power play.
Willander's 2025–26 Letter Grade
The Hockey News' Canucks site gave Willander a B grade for his performance during the 2025–26 season. He continued to improve throughout the year and demonstrated that he can play second-pair minutes. Willander's honesty during media scrums also showed maturity and an understanding of which areas of his game need improvement.

Based on the current roster, Willander's most likely role will be on the second pairing with Jamie Oleksiak. Having an experienced stay-at-home defender beside him should allow the right-shot defenceman more opportunities to join the rush. Willander is also a player who should get some time on the power play, which could help his overall point total next season.
Another thing to keep an eye on with Willander is how he develops under Manny Malhotra's leadership. Last year, the two were together for five games in the AHL before the young defenceman was called up. Ultimately, Malhotra's defensive system and ability to connect with younger players should help Willander take his game to the next level.
Finally, Willander's leadership skills should continue to grow throughout the campaign. As mentioned, he is confident when talking to the media and doesn't hide from the cameras after losses. Willander is the type of player who should be part of the leadership group and could be wearing a letter sooner rather than later.
