The WHL is set to play a significant role in this year's 2024 NHL Draft. 57 players were included on NHL Central Scouting's final rankings, with a handful expected to be drafted in the first round. Today's draft profile is of Spokane Chiefs' Berkly Catton, who enters the draft as the eighth-ranked North American Skater.

Catton is a star in the making. Scoring 58 goals and recording 116 points in 68 games, he was one of the most consistent players in the CHL this season. A dynamic game-breaker, it shouldn't be long before Catton is making an impact at the NHL level.

When watching Catton, the first noticeable attribute is his skating. He can beat defenders wide on the rush and is able to quickly change directions to open up space. Catton's skating also helps in the transition game, as he was one of the best when it came to carry exits and entries in the WHL this season.

Once Catton gets into the offensive zone, he uses a variety of tools to create offensive chances. He can rip shots past goaltenders off the rush but also proved to be a fantastic playmaker. A dangerous threat every time he touches the puck; his presence often draws extra defenders, which creates open space for teammates in scoring positions.

One area of Catton's game that does not get talked about enough is his work in the defensive zone. Whether it is at even strength or on the penalty kill, he finds ways to create turnovers and pressure the opposition out of the zone. Catton's ability to read the play also allows him to intercept passes, which often leads to scoring chances in the transition game.

The big question surrounding Catton is will be a center or winger at the NHL level. It is clear that he can play center at an elite level, but some teams may see him as a winger due to his size. While there are plenty of examples of smaller forwards having long careers at center, this will be one storyline to follow once Catton makes the jump to the pro level.

Catton is projected to be a top-ten pick in this year's draft. He has all the tools needed to become a top-six forward in the NHL who also plays on both the power play and penalty kill. Whichever franchise selects, Catton is getting not just a great player but a great leader who is sure to make an impact at the NHL level for a long time.
