Welcome to this edition of "The Stats Behind The Game." This recurring deep dive breaks down the analytics behind each Vancouver Canucks game as recorded by Natural Stat Trick. In this article, we look back on the Canucks 3-2, Game 5 victory over the Edmonton Oilers.
Game 5 was the closest from an analytics perspective all series. Vancouver held a slight edge in even-strength scoring chances 25-23 while also winning the high-danger scoring chances battle 10-9. The only real separation at even-strength was xGF, where the Canucks posted a final tally of 2.53 compared to the Oilers' 1.8.
As for the heatmap, it shows Vancouver's impressive performance in the offensive zone. The Canucks generated chances from all over the ice while continually crashing the net. This led to multiple chances and, eventually, the game-winning goal. Ultimately, Vancouver did a great job at both ends of the ice and was rewarded with a Game 5 victory.

When diving into the analytics, one player who stood out for all the right reasons was Quinn Hughes. In 19:07 of even-strength ice time, Hughes had an xGF% of 70.87, while the Canucks held a 17-7 scoring-chances advantage when he was on the ice. Hughes also showed his willingness to get the puck on net, finishing the night with four shots plus another five that were blocked. The captain stepped up in a big way and, while he didn't register a point, was a difference-maker all night.
Lastly, the trio of Nils Höglander, Elias Lindholm and Elias Pettersson had a solid night. The line played 8:01 together and finished Game 5 with an xGF% of 60.91. They also finished with a 6-3 high-danger scoring chances advantage and held Edmonton to four shots on ice. It seems that Rick Tocchet's line juggling worked as the "Tre Kronor" line made an impact in Game 5.
