The Vancouver Canucks have re-signed two of their restricted free agents, signing Linus Karlsson and Cole McWard each to a one-year, two-way contract extension worth $775,000. Both players played in at least one game at the NHL level but spent most of their seasons in the AHL with the Abbotsford Canucks. With the signings, the Canucks now have five remaining restricted free agents that need contracts this summer.
Karlsson set a new career high in the AHL this season, recording 60 points in 60 games. He also played in four regular-season games with the NHL and made his playoff debut with the Canucks this season. With a strong training camp and preseason, the 24-year-old could be an everyday player at the NHL level during the 2024-25 campaign.
As for McWard, he played one game for Vancouver at the beginning of the season before playing the rest of the year with Abbotsford. In 57 games, the right-shot defender recorded a career-high 17 points while also playing in six games during the 2024 Calder Cup Playoffs. The recently turned 23-year-old is also expected to make a push for an NHL roster spot next season.
