Matt Brassard has decided to make the transition from player to coach, joining the AJHL's Lloydminster Bobcats as an Assistant Coach. Brassard was a seventh-round draft pick by the Vancouver Canucks in 2017 and spent the last season in the ECHL. The right-shot defenceman played for three teams during his OHL career before attending the University of Prince Edward Island. Brassard would play over 50 games at the USport level while also winning a Gold Medal at the 2023 Winter World University Games.

Brassard was one of eight players selected in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft by Vancouver. Of the eight, five have played games in the NHL, including Elias Pettersson, who signed an eight-year, $92.8 million contract extension earlier this year. The other four who have played games in the NHL are Kole Lind, Jonah Gadjovich, Michael DiPietro and Jack Rathbone.

As for the Bobcats, the organization has helped produce nine players that have made it to the NHL. Some of the more recognizable names include Wade Redden, Scott Hartnell and former Canucks goaltender Braden Holtby. Lloydminster's AJHL season is set to begin on September 13, when they play host to the Fort McMurray Oil Barons.
