The Moose Jaw Warriors draw first blood after a 3-2 win in Game 1.
The Moose Jaw Warriors and Portland Winterhawks kicked off the WHL Final in style on Friday night. Despite giving up a 2-0 lead, the Warriors were able to pick up the 3-2 win, taking a 1-0 series lead over the Winterhawks. The hero of the night was Matthew Savoie, whose ninth goal of the playoffs with three minutes left broke the deadlock in Portland.
The main storyline of the game was the play of Jackson Unger Jan Špunar. Unger made 31 saves in the win, while Špunar held Portland in the game as long as he could, stopping 34 of 37. If the two keepers can keep up this level of play throughout the series, it should be a low-scoring matchup that will leave many skaters frustrated.
The two teams won't have much time to prep for Game 2 as it is scheduled for Saturday night. Moose Jaw will be looking to head home with a 2-0 series lead, while Portland has their eyes on tying the series. Game time is set for 7:00 pm PT from Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
