For the first time in franchise history, the Moose Jaw Warriors are WHL Champions. The Warriors picked up their first Ed Chynoweth Cup thanks to a 4-2 victory in Game 4 against the Portland Winterhawks. With the win, Moose Jaw made history as, for the first time, all three CHL Finals resulted in four-game sweeps.
The Warriors received big performances from across their lineup. Martin Rysavy finished the night with two goals, while for the second straight game, Brayden Schuurman scored the game-winning goal. Atley Calvert also had a strong final WHL game, recording an assist and helping his hometown team advance to the Memorial Cup for the first time.
Despite being swept, the Winterhawks were tough opponents and deserve credit for the way they played. Jan Špunar was a rock for Portland all playoffs, while Nate Danielson, James Stefan and Gabe Klassen were standouts during their run. While the roster will look different next year, the Winterhawks should have enough talent to once again challenge for the top spot in the West during the 2024/25 season.
Moose Jaw will now have a few days to bask in the glory before heading to Saginaw for the 2024 Memorial Cup. The Warriors will open up their tournament against the hosts on May 24 at 5:30 pm ST, with all games being broadcasted on TSN. While it won't be an easy tournament, Moose Jaw enters the event with a deep roster and will be looking to bring the Memorial Cup back to the WHL for the first time since 2014.
