A preview of Canucks forward Linus Karlsson's 2026-27 season.

Welcome to The Hockey News Vancouver Canucks site's 2026–27 player preview article series. This series will outline the expectations for every player projected to play for Vancouver during the 2026–27 season. Today's player is Canucks forward Linus Karlsson.

Karlsson's 2025-2026 Season

Few players changed the trajectory of their careers more than Karlsson last season.

When training camp ended, Karlsson had earned a spot on Vancouver's opening-night roster, but uncertainty still surrounded his role. Because he was no longer waiver-exempt, the Canucks risked losing him if they sent him back to the Abbotsford Canucks. Even after making the team, Karlsson watched the season opener from the press box. Making the roster was one thing; convincing the coaching staff he belonged in the lineup every night was another.

By season's end, those doubts had largely disappeared. Karlsson finished with 15 goals and 35 points in 79 games. Remarkably, 13 of those goals came at five-on-five, tying for the team lead, while his 31 even-strength points ranked first on the Canucks.

The numbers themselves are impressive. The way Karlsson produced makes them even more so.

Karlsson spent most of the season in Vancouver's bottom six, generating offence without consistent top-six deployment or extended power-play opportunities. As injuries created new opportunities, he also earned looks alongside higher-end talent. His willingness to battle around the crease, win pucks along the boards, and arrive in dangerous scoring areas made him one of Canucks' most effective complementary forwards.

Eleven of his 15 goals came from high-danger areas in front of the net, illustrating exactly how he creates offence. His role steadily expanded as the season progressed. After skating just 6:49 against the Anaheim Ducks on November 26, Karlsson caught fire with five goals in six games around the holiday break. The surge helped pave the way for the two-year contract extension worth $2.25 million annually that he signed shortly afterward.

One glimpse of Karlsson's upside in an expanded role came late in the season alongside Elias Pettersson and Jake DeBrusk against the Boston Bruins. The trio controlled play throughout the night, finishing with a 16–0 Corsi For margin and a 100 percent expected goals share at five-on-five. While only a small sample, it hinted that Karlsson's direct, net-front game could complement elite talent. By March 28 against the Calgary Flames, his ice time had climbed to a career-high 18:05.

Karlsson's 2025-26 Letter Grade

For his efforts in the 2025–26 season, The Hockey News' Canucks site gave Karlsson an A+ grade. The grade reflected how dramatically Karlsson exceeded expectations. After entering the season simply trying to establish himself as an NHL regular, he finished it with an expanded role and a new two-year contract.

Karlsson's 2026-27 Predictions

Breaking into the NHL is one thing. Proving the first season was not an outlier is another.

Karlsson appears poised to take another step. Reunited with Manny Malhotra, the coach who helped unlock his offensive game in Abbotsford, Karlsson enters the season with a coach who already understands how to maximize his strengths.

Deployment may determine how large a role Karlsson earns. If Brock Boeser remains alongside Marco Rossi, a training camp battle could emerge between Karlsson and Jonathan Lekkerimäki for a spot beside Elias Pettersson. Karlsson's puck retrieval and net-front presence could make him an intriguing complementary winger for Pettersson. Karlsson could also earn penalty killing opportunities on a Vancouver team that finished last in the NHL on the penalty kill and is looking to replace several regular contributors.

Consistency will ultimately determine whether another offensive jump follows. Karlsson opened the season without a goal in 13 games before catching fire around the holidays. After that, he scored in just one of the Canucks' final 14 games. Reducing those prolonged quiet stretches while maintaining his strong five-on-five play would go a long way toward establishing himself as a dependable top-six contributor.

Bold prediction: Karlsson scores 20 goals for the first time in his NHL career while establishing himself as a permanent top-six forward.
